Understanding the Corrosion Environment
Before selecting a material, it is essential to characterize the operating environment fully:
- Chemical media: What acids, alkalis, or salts are present?
- Concentration: Dilute vs. concentrated solutions behave very differently
- Temperature: Corrosion rates typically accelerate with temperature
- Pressure: High-pressure systems may require higher strength alloys

Alloy Selection Guide by Media
Sulfuric Acid (H₂SO₄)
For sulfuric acid handling, Incoloy 825 (UNS N08825) and Hastelloy C-276 are the most common choices. Incoloy 825 offers excellent resistance up to 50% concentration at elevated temperatures, while Hastelloy C-276 performs well across a wider range of concentrations and temperatures.
Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
Hydrochloric acid is highly aggressive to most metals. Hastelloy C-276 is among the few alloys that can handle HCl service, with corrosion rates of ≤0.2 mm/year in 5% boiling HCl.
Phosphoric Acid (H₃PO₄)
Both Incoloy 825 and Inconel 625 perform excellently in phosphoric acid environments. In the fertilizer industry where 50% H₃PO₄ at 80°C is common, corrosion rates remain below 0.05 mm/year for both alloys.
Seawater and Chloride Environments
Inconel 625 is the premier choice for seawater and chloride-containing environments. Its high chromium and molybdenum content provides exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
Caustic and Alkaline Environments
Inconel 600 (≥72% Ni) offers excellent resistance to caustic soda and alkaline solutions. In 50% NaOH at 100°C, corrosion rates are typically ≤0.05 mm/year.
